This is a quote from The Gazette posted on September 26 2009:

'Some of the anxiety surrounding the H1N1 vaccine stems from what is known as The Great Swine Flu Scare of '76. It all started when a swine-flu outbreak killed a U.S. soldier at Fort Dix in New Jersey. President Gerald Ford responded by convening a summit of scientists and ordering vaccinations for all 220 million Americans.'

And then:
'In the U.S., some people speculated that the vaccine was responsible for more than 500 people developing a paralyzing neurological disorder called Guillain-Barré Syndrome, with two dozen people dying from it.'
